Our established policies, guidelines, and procedures ensure that we conduct business in a manner that protects the environment and reduces energy consumption, natural resource consumption, and waste.
Each year Glatfelter invests millions of dollars in environmental improvement measures. Maintaining the quality of the environment is a responsibility we share with everyone who works and lives in or near communities where our facilities are located. Our company’s commitment to the environment is supported by all our employees, who assume personal responsibility for awareness and control of environmental issues on the job.

According to the American Forest and Paper Association, 57% of the paper consumed in the U.S. in 2007 was recovered for recycling. This equates to nearly 360 pounds of paper for each man, woman and child in the U.S.
An estimated 1.3 million people are directly employed in the planting, growing, managing and harvesting of trees and production of wood and paper products in all 50 states. (Source: AFPA, U.S. Census)
The forest industry ranks among the top ten manufacturing employers in 42 states, with an annual payroll of about $60 billion. That figures counts only those people directly engaged in the logging and manufacturing, not the many more who indirectly make their living from forest management and forest products.
The first paper merchant in America was Benjamin Franklin, who helped start 18 paper mills in Virginia and surrounding areas.
