A Message from the CEO
At Glatfelter, we focus on the business priorities that matter most, which include our commitment to sustainability. Caring for our customers, employees, communities and environment requires a balanced approach of strong financial performance, social responsibility and meaningful environmental stewardship. Only by achieving this balance long term can Glatfelter truly be sustainable.
Within our website, we share perspectives on our environmental, economic, and social responsibilities and the inherent sustainable capabilities of our global business. As we reflect on our progress in 2017, we celebrate the completion of a major environmental initiative within the Specialty Papers Business Unit: a $113 million investment to convert and modernize the boiler systems in the Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, and Chillicothe, Ohio, facilities. During this complex, multiyear project, we replaced the coal boilers with cleaner burning natural gas systems. The new boiler systems, paired with upgraded air pollution control equipment, will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 90% and greenhouse gases by nearly 60% percent.
Our Composite Fibers Business Unit, and its seven facilities, set a new safety record in 2017. Collectively, the facilities achieved industry top-quartile performance with a TCIR of 0.82. Glatfelter PEOPLE in Caerphilly, UK, and Scaër, France, completed the year without any recordable injuries, and our facility in the Philippines achieved over 1 million hours without an OSHA incident. In 2017, our Global Safety Improvement initiatives generated significant progress toward our ongoing safety mission: Injury Free Every Day!
In December 2017, we achieved a major milestone in the startup of our new airlaid facility in Fort Smith, Arkansas. We’ve invested approximately $85 million dollars to create this new, state-of-the-art production facility with the goal of capitalizing on the growing demand in North America for airlaid materials. Equally important, we positively impacted the region with our economic investment and the addition of nearly 80 jobs. The Fort Smith facility is Glatfelter’s fifth North American manufacturing operation and first U.S.-based operation for the Advanced Airlaid Materials Business Unit. The additional capacity in Fort Smith makes Glatfelter the world’s largest producer of airlaid material—and further strengthens our position as the supplier of choice in engineered materials.
From a social perspective, Glatfelter PEOPLE continued to positively impact the children at Tiffin Elementary in Chillicothe, Ohio. For the last several years, teams of Glatfelter PEOPLE have visited Tiffin on Friday mornings to greet the students as they start their day, providing encouragement and helping with homework. Glatfelter PEOPLE also helped 5th and 6th graders with their science fair projects and Pinewood Derby cars and promoted literacy by providing children’s books printed on Glatfelter paper. For this social collaboration, we were recognized with the Community Partner of the Year award by the Ohio School Board Administration in 2017.
Since 1864, Glatfelter has remained steadfast to meeting the needs of our customers, employees, communities and the environment. This unwavering commitment remains a fundamental principle as we continue to drive the company’s growth and prosperity.Dante C. Parrini
