US Based Wellness Programs

Glatfelter Employee Wellness

Glatfelter’s wellness programs are intended to help employees and their families become healthier, better utilize their health care and ultimately, spend less on complicated and expensive medical procedures. Our goal is to motivate all Glatfelter PEOPLE and their families to improve their health and quality of life – mind, body and spirit.

Promoting employee wellness is a win/win for everyone involved. Employees and their families become healthier, resulting in cost savings for the company.

Glatfelter currently spends $30 million in health and welfare benefit programs in the United States, with another $5 million on retiree programs. The wellness initiative is aimed at reducing the annual $35 million cost, by providing education to our employees through our targeted programs.

Glatfelter Employee Wellness The Glatfelter Wellness initiative is designed to lower benefit costs and promote healthier, active lifestyles among all active Glatfelter employees, retirees and their families. Through coaching, Health Risk Assessments (HRAs), and programs geared toward walking, weight management, tobacco cessation and other specific health related areas, employees and their families are given additional tools to address their medical challenges. When the employee, family and retiree are healthier, less health care is required, resulting in benefits for both the employee and our Company.

Glatfelter continues to monitor its health and welfare benefit costs. As we work toward keeping these costs low, we also intend to continue sponsoring these wellness initiatives intended to reduce these costs.

Specialty Paper Business Unit (SPBU) 2010 Initiatives and Results
  • 41% of our employees, retirees and family members completed a Health Risk Assessment (HRA), known as the Know Your Health Survey and learned more about their health.
  • Glatfelter provided 100% cost reimbursement for employees attending Weight Watchers, when meeting attendance requirements. Approximately 125 employees and spouses participated each session for a total of over 2,000 pounds lost.
  • Employee Wellness committees sponsored health fairs as well as other valuable wellness programs.
  • Introduced and provided tobacco cessation programs using Allen Carr’s Easy Way To Stop Smoking. Forty-six employees and spouses attended and have experienced a 47% quit rate following the program.
  • Glatfelter continued to provide reimbursement for qualified gym memberships, up to $200 per year. In 2010 Glatfelter reimbursed 178 Glatfelter PEOPLE for this benefit.

European Based Wellness Programs

While health and welfare benefit programs are effectively provided through government programs and are constructed differently for our European-based employees, we continue to promote healthy lifestyles by encouraging active participation in Europe through Company-sponsored recreational programs as well as smoking cessation programs.

Composite Fibers Business Unit (CFBU) 2010 Initiatives

CFBU demonstrated its commitment to wellness through participation in the “Six heures de Scaër.” This was the 23rd edition of this six-hour relay race where one “tour” equals 2.5 km; approximately 120 six-member teams and 25 individuals participated. Among them were three Glatfelter teams of six women and twelve men from our locations in the U.K., Germany and France. Glatfelter participants ranged in age from 20 to 53 years old and some members brought marathon experience to the team. The teams performed well and demonstrated the strength of working together.

Within our Caerphilly operations, four employees set out to tackle the Brecon Beacons Mountain Trail Challenge. This is an annual event staged in the Brecon Beacons National Park, a mountainous region in South Wales. This area is typically used by the UK Special Forces for military training, but on that day was used to challenge participants to complete a 30 mile hike of the Brecon Beacon ridges where terrain includes steep climbs, rock screes, bog lands and peaks up to 886 meters. The hike began at 7:00 AM, and ended well after dark in the late evening. This hike was a personal challenge for the hikers, completing a strenuous physical challenge while raising over £1,500 for a local charity.

CFBU offers a variety of wellness programs throughout their locations, including:

  • Company sponsorship of various sports teams; soccer, rugby, running, and Nordic walking. In addition, Glatfelter employees have benefited by financial support to participate in a variety of marathons internationally.
  • Smoking Cessation Programs; introduced to employees and spouses in 2010
  • Company sponsored health fairs and vaccine programs
  • Regularly scheduled safety training sessions for all employees to include first-aid, handling of heart defibrillators as well as EMT training and an annual safety awareness day
2011 Strategy and Plans
