Process Engineer

Located in Mount Holly, NC the Process Engineer is responsible for the frontline implementation of Lean Manufacturing and 6σ Principles in order to continuously improve environmental, health and safety, quality, cost, and time-based activities related to personnel, operations, and equipment associated with the Airlaid paper machines at the Mt Holly facility. The Process Engineer will identify and evaluate the feasibility of new technological developments and best practices and recommend solutions for application in operations inclusive of recommending, justifying, and leading Capital Budget projects. There will be times when the Process Engineer will serve on committees, task forces, teams as assigned and conduct special assignments. This position will assume the responsibilities of the Line Managers as required during vacations or sickness.

  • Safety:
  • Leads for safety compliance by following Glatfelter’s Safety Policy
  • Promotes and fosters a workplace culture of continuous improvement of safety practices
  • Ensures and is accountable for personal compliance with Plant safety and Departmental safety rules
  • Completes necessary reporting for near miss accidents, first aid cases, and OSHA recordable injuries
  • Completes assigned action items for near miss accidents, first aid cases, and OSHA recordable injuries
  • Investigates and completes assigned action items from safety suggestions as practical
  • Trains and coaches employees, as needed, in developing safe work habits
  • Performs necessary Lock Out Tag Out and Confined Space entry activities
  • Develops, improves and implements safety procedures and initiatives as required
  • Completes and provides feedback to employees on Job Safety Observation Cards
  • Ensures completion of personal monthly safety training by assigned due date
  • Applies 6S Workplace Organization Principles
  • Environmental:
  • Leads for environmental compliance by following Glatfelter’s Environmental Policy
  • Ensures that all Mt Holly processes are operated in accordance with all environmental permits
  • Promotes and fosters a workplace culture of continuous improvement of environmental practices
  • Ensures and is accountable for personal compliance with established Environmental Management Operating
  • Completes necessary reporting for near miss incidents, public complaints, and environmental incidents
  • Completes assigned action items for near miss incidents, public complaints, and environmental incidents
  • Investigates and completes assigned action items from environmental suggestions as practical
  • Trains and coaches employees, as needed, in developing environmentally sound work habits
  • Participates in DEP and EPA audits as required
  • Completes required environmental documentation accurately, and in a timely fashion
  • Quality:
  • Leverages the use of Lean Manufacturing and 6σ Principles to:
  • Determine sources of process variation and impact on quality specifications
  • Define and document the problem to be solved and the desired outcome
  • Measure statistical performance of process
  • Analyze process performance using graphical analysis and inferential statistics
  • Improve process performance by investigating and implementing ideas where practical
  • Control process performance by creating, training on, implementing, and auditing Standard Work Procedures and Control and Reaction Plans
  • Cost:
  • Understands cost implications related to raw material purchases and usage
  • Works with the Maintenance department to ensure that maintenance activities are completed in a cost-effective manner
  • Identifies the need for capital projects, and develops the business case for such projects
  • Coordinates the planning and implementation of capital projects in a cost effective manner with the Engineering and Maintenance departments
  • Time:
  • Strives to understand deviations from daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly production budget and works with operations leadership to determine root cause and corrective actions
  • Assists with preparation and execution of biannual shutdowns to meet established time schedule
  • Coordinates the planning and implementation of capital projects in a timely manner with the Engineering and Maintenance departments
  • Other Responsibilities:
  • Provides process and technical expertise for Airlaid operations
  • Provides troubleshooting expertise for all areas production areas, particularly in the absence of Line Managers
  • Assumes departmental and mill call out responsibilities as scheduled. In the absence of operations Line Managers and Production Manager, provides meeting coverage and assists in directing operations, as needed, according to the call out schedule.
  • Assists operations leadership with establishing and maintaining operational and training protocols
  • Assists with verifying new employees’ competence prior to being placed on the job
  • Provides written and verbal guidance when the process needs to be operated outside of normal parameters for safety or operational reasons
  • Participates in the selection and training of backup shift supervisors and hourly working leads
  • Fosters a continuous learning environment
  • Leads and participates in Kaizen events
  • Attends technical seminars and meetings for the purpose of continuing technical training
  • Evaluates and recommends process improvement projects, and supports related trials
  • Serves on committees, task forces, teams as assigned and conducts special assignments as directed
  • Provides process and technical support during maintenance outages that may require working night shift, weekends, and holidays

Qualifications/Experience:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily as agreed by incumbent and supervisory manager. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in Chemical Engineering or Paper Science, and at least 2 semesters of industrial manufacturing internship and/or co-op experience. Lean Manufacturing certification and 6σ Green Belt certification desired but not necessary.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures. Ability to write operational and safety procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, engineers and hourly workers.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in verbal, mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
