Research & Development Engineer

Glatfelter is seeking a Research and Development Engineer for our manufacturing site in Old Hickory, TN.  The successful candidate will be an expert in Spunlace and other nonwoven technologies, as well as an independent thought leader capable of planning, executing, and supervising multiple innovation projects simultaneously.  The R&D Engineer must be forward-thinking and generate creative solutions in new product development and process optimization based on functional guidance from management, market analysis, and in-house studies/trials.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop new products as defined by management utilizing technology road maps, functional plans and other resources
• Deliver on project objectives in the initiation, design, development, and optimization of Nonwoven Fabrics/Laminates after receiving functional guidance
• Plan, conduct, co-ordinate and supervise lab and pilot studies with minimal supervision. Leads product scale up and line trials and writes trial reports
• Develop and build laboratory capabilities for applications development
• Research all available raw materials (fibers and finishes) which could lead to improved products and profitability
• Market analysis, cost comparisons/evaluations, competitor product and process assessment
• Develop and maintain an expert level knowledge of spunlace and other related nonwoven technologies and high performance nonwovens and wipes supply chain.
• Ensure protection of technologies, processes, materials, and products through appropriate use of patents and trade secrets.
• Set priorities and keep momentum going on a mix of projects portfolio including the New products, raw materials, cost-out programs, technology platforms, process engineering development and project timelines. Respond quickly to shifting priorities without losing sight of longer-range strategic projects and goals. Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and on multiple projects simultaneously; good prioritization and decision-making skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
• Challenge assumptions and think innovatively to solve complex problems creatively
• Willingness to periodically work weekends or be on-call for global interactions in multiple time zones or to support accelerated timelines.
• Travel to customer/supplier/outside lab/research facilities to run trials/troubleshoot problems and/or participate in conferences and tradeshows

Qualifications

• BS/MS/PhD in Textile (nonwovens), Pulp & Paper, Fiber Science or related, Polymer, Material Science or Chemical Engineering
• Minimum of 3-5 years of industrial experience in a Research or Product & Process development environment
• Experience or knowledge of lamination, embossing, calendaring and other converting process is desirable
• Experience with Stage-Gate Process, Statistical Data Analysis and Design of Experiment.
• Strong proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, Access, SharePoint, SAP, etc.

Key Competencies

• Advanced fiber/materials/polymer science knowledge is highly desirable.
• Expertise in products and materials associated with Surgical and Infection Prevention including Surgical Gowns, Drapes, Facial Protection, Nonwoven barrier materials, wipes and high performance materials
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills and good business acumen.
• Strategic thinking: understand, support and extend long term view of JH technology innovation
• Strong project management skills and familiarity with Stage-Gate or Tollgate project management process
• Ability to work as a part of a team and/or to lead projects independently in achieving set target within budget and time.
• Strong customer facing communication skills in technical and business settings.
• Knowledge of Spanish, French, or German a plus.
