Shift Leader

Located in Fort Smith, AR, under direction of the Line Leader, supervises the operation of the entire shift, including product quality, training and safety of personnel, maintenance of equipment, keeping records and reports, receiving shipments of raw materials, and housekeeping duties.  The Shift Leader is responsible for line operation.  He or she is responsible for plant operations during night and weekend shifts. During shifts where Leadership of related departments are available the Shift Leader consults with other Leadership through the Line Leader.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understands the airlaid fabrication process and knows the production requirements to meet budget objectives
  • Knowledgeable in the use and operation of the production equipment. Understands the operation sequences for machine startup an operation;
  • Assists operators in solving problems and supervises machine adjustments to insure meeting specifications;
  • Directs operation activities including emergency scheduling of personnel to maintain production rates in a safe manner;
  • Monitors production quality results to ensure 1st grade quality production;
  • Monitors normal operations in relation to established KPI targets;
  • Reports shift operations and transitions information with other Shift Leaders, the line Leader, and department head leadership;
  • Prepares, reviews and verifies shift reports to ensure adequate team operation. Ensures information is adequately transferred to the operations team in conjunction with the Line Leader;
  • Identifies problems which occurred during the shift to proper service leaders and ensure follow-up;
  • Studies and makes recommendations for improvements in procedures and practice to achieve maximum operational efficiency.
  • Assists in training shift personnel to assure safe operation, maximum production, and 1st grade quality;
  • Enforces good housekeeping, safety, and energy conservation practices and maintains discipline within the department;
  • Reports absenteeism, missed time, and other situation relating to shift personnel in order to maintain a safe and productive operation team;
  • Promotes and maintains good Company-Employee relations.
  • Conducts regular team safety meetings to inform operators of potential risks and maintains safe working practices within the department at all times;
  • Promotes and supports Glatfelter’s Environmental and Health and Safety Policies. Ensures that these policies are known, understood and followed by all operation personnel;
  • Ensures that Glatfelter – Fort Smith Safety Rules and Regulations are being followed by everyone present on the production floor.
  • Cooperates with supporting services/departments in maintaining production schedules to meet customer needs;
  • Assists with preventive maintenance program by reporting any unscheduled downtime. Follows-up on problem resolution;
  • Works with scheduling to proceed with grade changes in a way to ensure optimized efficiency;
  • Ensures Quality mind set is promoted and present within the operations team. Follows up expeditiously on all Quality non conformities.

EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two year college or technical school; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
